This article examines ellipsis (ḥadhf) in Sūrat al-Jinn as a rhetorical device and as a source of interpretive divergence among Muslim exegetes. Adopting a descriptive‑analytical method and accepting the Qurʾān’s linguistic inimitability (iʿjāz bayānī) as a theological premise (rooted in classical Islamic and Shiʿi hermeneutics), the study identifies instances of ellipsis involving the object, verb, genitive construct, subject of a nominal sentence, and the pronoun of affair. Findings reveal two competing paradigms: a “syntactic‑rhetorical” approach that reconstructs omitted elements (taqdīr) to uncover layered meanings, exemplified by Zamakhsharī and Ṭabāṭabāʾī; and a “meaning‑based reading” that accepts surface meaning as sufficient for ethical‑catechetical purposes, represented by Ḥusaynī Hamadānī and Mughnīyah. Cases analysed include Q 72:12 (ellipsis of a verb with “harabā”), Q 72:16 (ellipsis of “qul ūḥiya ilayya” via iḥtibāk), Q 72:11 (ellipsis of the genitive construct), and Q 72:13, 72:24, 72:26 (ellipsis of the subject of a nominal sentence). The study concludes that ellipsis in the Qurʾān is not a grammatical defect but a purposeful rhetorical strategy that generates legitimate interpretive pluralism, challenging commentators to balance structural analysis with ethical readability.
